Venice is an improbable city. The sheer hubris of the founders in creating an archipelago of islands, intersected by canals and linked by bridges, sitting offshore in a shallow, brackish lagoon, never ceases to amaze. That this tiny Republic on stilts should rise to become one of the most powerful city-states in the medieval world just adds to the wonder.

Towards the Winter months, Venice starts to get chilly as the exposed city succumbs to the elements, but that's what the salons of the grand cafes and the cosy back rooms of the bacari (wine bars) were designed for. And remember, there is no bad weather, only poor clothing choices. Simply wrap up warm.

Venice became a city of romance, intrigue and pleasure-seeking. Those centuries of hedonism at the expense of urban renewal means that the physical heritage of its once vast wealth remains pretty much intact, on magnificent display from land and water.

An improbable, inconceivable city it might be, but it also feels eternal and unchanging, which is why it is impossible to resist the spell of La Serenissima.
