Venice is an improbable city. The sheer hubris of the founders in creating an archipelago of islands, intersected by canals and linked by bridges, sitting offshore in a shallow, brackish lagoon, never ceases to amaze. That this tiny Republic on stilts should rise to become one of the most powerful city-states in the medieval world just adds to the wonder. An improbable, inconceivable city it might be, but it also feels eternal and unchanging, which is why it is impossible to resist the spell of La Serenissima.
